- Here is an adaptation of a prayer entitled “A Minister’s Bible” from the Puritan book of prayers, “The Valley of Vision.”
O God of truth, we thank you for the Holy Scriptures. We thank you for their precepts, promises, directions, and light. In them we learn more of Christ, are enabled to retain His truth, and given grace to follow it.
Help us to lift up the gates of our souls that He may come in and show us Himself when we search the Scriptures. For we have no lines to search its depths and no wings to soar to its heights.
By aid of the Holy Spirit may we be unable to explore all the Scriptures’ truths, to love them with all our hearts, to embrace them with all our power, and to engraft them into our lives. Bless to our souls to gain grains of truth harvested from Your Word. May they take deep root, be refreshed by heavenly dew, be ripened by heavenly rays, and be harvest to our joy joy and Your praise!
Help us to gain profit by what we read as a treasure beyond all treasure and as a fountain which can replenish our dry hearts whose waters, flowing through us as a perennial river, are drawn-on by the Holy Spirit. Enable us to distill from its pages faithful prayer that grasps the arm of Your omnipotence, achieves wonders, obtains blessings, and draws down streams of mercy.
From Your Word show us how our words have often been unfaithful to You, hurtful to those around us, empty of grace, full of folly, dishonoring to our calling. Then write Your own words upon our hearts and inscribe them on our lips. So shall all glory be to You in our reading of Your Word!
In Jesus Name.
